Carrie Mae Weems The Most Influential Afro-American Women In Photography!

By TheGoodSisOfCLT, Aug 1 2018 03:28PM

As I Login Into My Computer This Morning To Check My E-mails, I Noticed That Google Doodles Had A Tribute To Gerda Taro, Who Is Considered One Of The Most Influential Women In Photography As She Covered The German & Spanish War; Ultimately Leading To Her Death In Action.

While All Women To Me Whom Have The Courage To Stand Up And Pursue Their Destinies Are Warriors In Their Own Rights; I Started To Wonder. So I Clicked The Google Doodles Image To Read More About Gerda Taro. As Im Scrolling Through The Pages, I Notice That A Flood Of Journalist Jumped On Google's Idea To Publish Their Own Sort Of Tribute To The Photojournalist. My Mind Began To Wonder, Well Whom Was The Most Influential Afro-American Women In Photography? My Curiosity Got The Best Of Me, As I Closed Up My Reading On Gera Taro; And Began To Ask Google Whatever My Heart Desired.

Immediately, 3 Women Came Up In My Search Engine. Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, And Coreen Simpson.. All Of Whom I Promise To Discuss. Although Each Women That I Read About Literally Amazed Me Of Their Elegance & Grace... The Woman That Stood Out To Me The Most , At This Moment, Was Carrie Mae Weems. The Connection To Lorna & Coreen Simpson Is High As Well, As I Noted That They Were Born In New York.. Just As I Was. My Reading Continued..

Weems' Story, Her Photography, Her Journey Just Seemed To Be Calling For Me To Educate Myself More On Her Work. Looking At Her Art Series, Actually Inspired Me To Pick Up A Camera And See What Kind Of Story I Can Tell! The Idea Of Researching Up On Her More Filled My Mind As Birds Fill The Sky On A Sunny Morning! Chyyy, I Dived Right On In!

Photo # 3 Caption: WHEN ASKED WHAT HE WANTS TO BE WHEN HE GROWS UP, THE BLACK BOY SAYS,"I WANT TO BE A WHITE MAN CAUSE MY MAMA SAY, 'A NIGGER AIN'T SHIT.'"

The Following Picture Below Represent: Carrie Mae Weems The Kitchen Table Series (1990)

Hope You Enjoyed This Light History Fact That Blew My Mind! The Kitchen Table Series, To Me Tells A Story Of How A Woman Started Off With What She Thought Was Everything Planned Out-- Her Man.. Her House-- Her Dinner At The Table That She Eats On. Then Something Changes-- Normally Life.. She Realizes That She Is Her Only Provider.. For Her & Her Child.. She Goes Through Something Emotional As Most Women Do Alone. Then, We Call Or Homegirls To Try To Ease The Pain Over Laughter, Drinks, And Cards. She Tries To Put Her Best Face Forward To Help Her Child, Even Through She Herself Needs Help.. As Women, We Deal With A Lot While Trying To Maintain A Household, Provide Support To The Men, Educate Our Kids, And Still Pursue Our Careers. Hence, Her Solo At The Table Towards The End Of The Series. I Look At It As A Metamorphic State Because It Seems Like She Is Accepting The Changes & Breaking Out Of Something Heavy.

Personally, I Think The Last Picture Was Very Inspirational, Highlighting The Fact That You Can Find Sanity In The Smallest Things In Life.. Such As Playing A Solo Game Of Cards At Your Kitchen Table. If You Think About It, Wood Retains A Lot Of Energy. The Experiences Shared At A Kitchen Table May Be Simple To Some. During These Times; Dinner Time Was The Highlight of Most Afro-Americans Days. Their Own Special Time, Each Day, Dedicated To Reconnecting With Their Families After The Harsh Realities Of Society! This Series Really Spoke To Me On A Inspirational Level. How The Story Was Captured Is Absolutely Genius & Far Too Advanced For Art Of It's Time!

Often TImes History Is Only Told From One Point Of View-- Now We Have The Options To Educate Ourselves On The History That Seems To Be Forgotten! Do You Have Lost & Forgotten Afro-American Figure In History You Would Like Featured? Just Send Over Your Suggestions To TheGoodSisOfCLT@gmail.com And I WIll Be Sure To Research And Add Your Suggestion To The Rotation! Thank You So Much For Stopping By This Little Blog Space In My Galaxy!
